Which of these beliefs do you think gets in your way of being nicer to yourself:
- I’ll look weak or passive.
- I’ll become too lazy.
- I’ll become too self-indulgent.
- I don’t deserve to be nice to myself.
- If I go easy on myself, I won’t improve.
If any of those resonated with you, then let me invite you into the power of learning and practicing self-compassion as a superpower for living an emotionally resilient life.
What is self-compassion?
Self-compassion is treating yourself the way you’d treat a good friend or someone you love if they were suffering or experiencing a moment of pain. If someone you love is really having a hard time, or was just criticized or victimized, you probably wouldn’t say “suck it up buttercup!” or affirm for them how worthless they are. You’d probably offer to listen, give them some kind words or a hug, tell them that they’re not alone. Self-compassion is treating yourself the way you'd treat a good friend.
