The I-Ching or the Book of Changes is an ancient text from China. It is an oracle and has been consulted over millennia to have a heads up on what is coming up next. The I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text and the oldest of the Chinese classics. It is believed to date back to the Zhou dynasty (1046-256 BCE) and has been used for centuries as a tool for divination and as a guide for moral and philosophical reflection. The I Ching is based on the concept of yin and yang, which represent the balance and interdependence of opposing forces in the universe. It consists of 64 hexagrams, each with its own unique meaning and interpretation. The book has been traditionally passed down by word of mouth and was not written down until the Warring States period. The I Ching has been widely studied and interpreted by scholars and philosophers throughout Chinese history and continues to be widely used in Chinese culture today.
Consulting an Oracle is known as divination and most forms of divination do ensure the use of intuition. However, for those of us who are more rationally oriented the I-Ching or the Yi-Jing, is an evocative device that presents a manner of looking at a situation giving a 360-degree perspective so that the seeker has all the information at their disposal. The I-Ching gets to the heart of a situation and can define the situation in detail looking into the past, present and future with an eye on how the situation will evolve, what is the heart of the matter and what is the opposing factor.
The I-Ching is cast by drawing 6 lines and then interpreting the hexagram. I’ve been working with the I-Ching since 2000 when my Reiki Master had introduced me to the book. Since then, I have taught the I-Ching and divined with it. It is a book that touches upon all facets of human existence, be it birth, joy, sorrow, heartbreak, enterprise, success, betrayal or friendship.
