Last year, I found myself in a store where they announced 80% off all post-seasonal items. I raced to the front of the store like I was running a 100-meter dash. I walked out with bags full of incredible deals, feeling absolutely thrilled.

That’s how I feel about using my breath to relax during stressful moments. It’s the best deal out there, no coupon required. Think of it like the doorcrasher of relaxation techniques—a stress-busting deal you can tap into at anytime, anywhere. No fancy equipment needed. No special clothing or gear. You don’t have to be in a quiet space, nor do you need to wait for the perfect moment. You don’t even need to block off a chunk of time. It’s available 24/7, and the best part? It’s completely free.

However, like any great deal, there’s a catch. To unlock the full potential of this tool, you need to understand how to use it. Just like you need a strategy to shop the best deals, you need some breathing techniques to make the most of your breath. We’re talking about controlled breathing—something that yogis have practiced for thousands of years and that modern science now supports as a powerful tool for reducing stress and enhancing well-being.

The Science of Breathing

Breathing is something we do unconsciously. Every day, we take about 20,000 breaths without giving them a second thought. The primary purpose of our breath is simple: we breathe in oxygen to fuel our bodies and exhale carbon dioxide, which our body needs to get rid of. Our cells require oxygen to produce energy, which powers every movement, thought, and action.

But here's the problem: most of us breathe shallowly. That means we don’t fill the bottom of our lungs with air, and we don’t expel all of the carbon dioxide we take in. Studies have shown that when we don’t fully exhale, we retain more carbon dioxide, leaving less oxygen available for our body to use. This can lead to feelings of fatigue, stress, and tension, among other things.

When we practice deep breathing, we engage the entire respiratory system. We expand our lungs fully, bring in more oxygen, and expel more carbon dioxide. But that’s not all. Deep breathing also activates the vagus nerve, a key player in the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of our body that controls relaxation. When we take deep breaths, the vagus nerve sends a signal to our brain that everything is OK, telling it to shut off the stress response (i.e., fight, flight, freeze). This triggers a cascade of relaxation throughout the body. Heart rate slows, muscles relax, and our overall stress levels decrease.

Breath and the Brain: Calming Your Stress Response

Scientific research backs up the effectiveness of controlled breathing. Studies have shown that breath practices can reduce stress, improve mood, and even enhance cognitive function. This makes sense, as deep breathing directly influences the autonomic nervous system, which regulates stress and relaxation. In fact, deep breathing is one of the most immediate and accessible techniques we can use to calm both our body and mind in moments of stress.

Let’s break down a couple of the simplest techniques that anyone can start using today.

Deep Breathing:

The simplest form of controlled breathing is deep breathing, also known as diaphragmatic breathing. The goal here is to take long, slow breaths that fill the lungs from bottom to top. This allows for a more efficient exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in the lungs.

To practice deep breathing, follow these steps:

Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4. Focus on pushing your belly out as you inhale (think of a Santa Claus belly!). You want to fill the bottom of your lungs with air.

Exhale through your mouth for a count of 4. Imagine you’re slowly releasing air from a balloon, allowing your belly to contract as you breathe out.

Repeat several times. Start with a few rounds of deep breathing and gradually increase the time as you get more comfortable.

Deep breathing is incredibly easy to incorporate into your daily life. You can do it while waiting for your toast to pop, sitting in class, waiting for your child at hockey practice, or even standing in line at the store. And the best part? Nobody will even notice you’re doing it. Deep breaths can calm your body in moments of potential stress, whether it’s before a big test, during an uncomfortable conversation, or when you're feeling anxious.

Box Breathing: The 4-4-4-4 Method

Box breathing, also known as tactical breathing, is another deep breathing technique that is widely used by athletes, military personnel, and first responders. It’s a bit more structured than deep breathing and requires more focus. This technique helps not only with relaxation but also with sharpening your focus and concentration.

Here’s how to practice box breathing:

Inhale for a count of 4. Take a deep breath in through your nose.

Hold your breath for a count of 4. Don’t exhale; simply hold the air in your lungs for a moment.

Exhale for a count of 4. Slowly breathe out through your mouth.

Hold again for a count of 4. After exhaling, hold your breath once more before beginning the cycle again.

The idea is to visualize a box, with each side representing one of the four phases (inhale, hold, exhale, hold). It’s a great exercise for calming nerves, regaining focus, and reducing anxiety. It can also be particularly helpful if you wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself unable to fall back asleep.

If the 4-count feels too long, feel free to shorten it to 3 seconds. The goal is to find a rhythm that works for you and helps you relax.

Children’s Breathing: Making It Fun

Breathing exercises aren’t just for adults—children can benefit from deep breathing as well. In fact, teaching children how to use their breath to calm themselves can help them better manage their emotions, reduce anxiety, and develop coping skills for stressful situations.

To make deep breathing fun for kids, you can use playful imagery to help them engage with the technique:

Smell the flowers, blow out the candles: Have your child imagine they are smelling a flower as they breathe in deeply, then blowing out candles on a birthday cake as they exhale.

Blow bubbles: Ask your child to imagine blowing bubbles after taking a big, deep breath. This helps them learn to exhale fully and relax.

Teddy bear belly breaths: For younger kids, you can place a stuffed animal on their belly while they lie down. Ask them to breathe deeply and raise the stuffed animal with their belly as they inhale, and lower it as they exhale.

Children’s breathing techniques work best when practiced regularly, even when they’re not in the middle of a stressful moment. Once children become familiar with deep breathing, they can more easily recognize when they’re getting upset and use breathing to calm down before a tantrum or meltdown occurs.

Breathing Doesn’t Take Time—It Saves Time

Our lives are busier than ever, and we often feel like there’s no time to do one more thing. But the beauty of breathing exercises is that they don’t require a lot of time or effort. You can fit them into your day without disrupting your routine, and once you start incorporating them, they’ll become second nature.

By taking just a few moments to practice deep breathing, you can reap significant benefits in terms of stress reduction, improved mood, and increased focus. It’s a small investment of time that pays huge dividends in terms of your well-being.

So, why not take advantage of this doorcrasher deal? Your breath is available whenever you need it, at no cost, with no hidden fees. You’ve got nothing to lose—except stress. Start today and breathe your way to a calmer, more focused, and more relaxed you.

Conclusion: Your Breath, Your Best Deal

Breathing is the most accessible and cost-effective tool we have to manage stress and improve our overall health. Whether you’re using deep breathing to calm yourself in stressful moments or practicing box breathing to enhance your focus, controlled breathing offers immediate benefits. And the best part? Packed with superfoods, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, these drinks make it easy to incorporate greens into your daily diet. Whether you're looking to enhance your energy, support digestion, or bolster your immune system, green drinks can play a pivotal role in achieving your wellness goals. In this guide, we'll explore everything you need to know about green nutritional drinks—from their health benefits to how to choose the best one. By the end, you'll feel empowered to make an informed choice and integrate these nutrient-packed drinks into your daily routine.

What Are Greens Drinks?

Greens drinks are powdered or liquid supplements designed to deliver a concentrated dose of nutrients derived from a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, algae, grasses, and other nutrient-rich superfoods. Originally created as a convenient way to bridge the gap in daily vegetable intake, they have evolved into sophisticated, multifunctional health beverages tailored to meet diverse health and wellness needs.

At their core, greens drinks are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants sourced from nutrient-dense plants like kale, spinach, spirulina, and barley grass. Over time, their formulations have expanded to include a host of other beneficial ingredients, such as prebiotics and probiotics for gut health, adaptogens for stress support, and digestive enzymes to aid in nutrient absorption. This evolution has transformed greens drinks into more than just a convenient vegetable substitute—they are now comprehensive supplements that promote overall health and vitality.

One of the standout features of greens drinks is their ability to cater to specific health goals. For instance:

	•	Energy Enhancement: Ingredients like matcha green tea and maca root provide a natural energy boost without the crash of caffeine.

	•	Detox Support: Compounds like milk thistle and chlorella aid in liver function and toxin elimination.

	•	Gut Health: With the inclusion of probiotics and prebiotics, greens drinks can improve digestion and strengthen the microbiome.

	•	Immune Boosting: Antioxidant-rich ingredients such as berries and vitamin C help bolster the immune system.

	•	Mental Clarity and Focus: Nootropic herbs like Rhodiola Rosea and ginseng are often included to enhance cognitive function and reduce mental fatigue.

	•	Stress Reduction: Adaptogens like ashwagandha help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance.

Another significant appeal of greens drinks is their convenience. In a fast-paced world where many struggle to consume the recommended daily servings of vegetables, greens drinks offer a quick and easy solution. Simply mix the powder with water, juice, or a smoothie, and you can instantly enjoy a nutrient-dense beverage that would otherwise require consuming multiple servings of fresh produce. This makes them an attractive option for busy professionals, parents, and anyone looking to maintain a healthy diet on the go.

The versatility of greens drinks further adds to their popularity. They can be incorporated into various wellness routines, whether as a morning energy booster, a mid-day pick-me-up, or part of a post-workout recovery plan. Many health-conscious individuals also appreciate their ability to support long-term wellness, as regular use can contribute to improved digestion, increased energy levels, and better overall health.

As the wellness industry continues to innovate, the variety of greens drink formulations has expanded to suit almost every dietary preference and lifestyle. Options now include organic, vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO products, ensuring that almost anyone can find a formulation that fits their needs. Some even include targeted ingredients to support beauty (like collagen and biotin), athletic performance (such as beetroot for circulation), or longevity (antioxidants like resveratrol and polyphenols).

The Health Benefits of Greens Drinks

1. With roots in ancient traditions and growing popularity among modern athletes, biohackers, and wellness enthusiasts, cold water immersion therapy is here to stay. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how cold plunge tubs work, their myriad health benefits, the types available, and how you can set one up at home.

How Cold Plunge Therapy Works

Cold plunge therapy involves immersing your body in cold water, typically ranging from 50°F to 59°F (10°C to 15°C). The sudden exposure to cold water triggers a series of physiological responses:

Vasoconstriction and Vasodilation: When exposed to cold, blood vessels constrict, reducing blood flow to the skin and extremities. Once you exit the cold water, vessels dilate, increasing circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues.

Nervous System Activation: The cold stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, releasing norepinephrine and endorphins that improve alertness and mood.

Thermogenesis: Cold exposure activates brown fat, a type of fat that burns calories to produce heat, boosting metabolism.

These mechanisms combine to deliver physical and mental health benefits, making cold plunge therapy a versatile wellness tool.

Health Benefits of Cold Plunge Tubs

1. Physical Recovery and Muscle Soreness

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts often turn to cold plunges for recovery. Cold water immersion reduces inflammation and helps flush out lactic acid buildup, speeding up muscle recovery after intense workouts.

Scientific Evidence: Studies published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine show that cold water immersion significantly reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) compared to passive recovery.

2. Mental Health and Stress Relief

Immersing in cold water triggers the release of endorphins and norepinephrine, which elevate mood and reduce anxiety. Studies have shown that regular cold exposure can also help combat symptoms of depression.

Scientific Evidence: A study in Medical Hypotheses found that cold water therapy can stimulate the production of beta-endorphins and dopamine, both of which are associated with improved mood and reduced stress.

3. Improved Circulation and Cardiovascular Health

Cold water immersion improves circulation by training blood vessels to contract and expand efficiently. This process strengthens the cardiovascular system and enhances overall blood flow.

Benefits for Cardiovascular Health:

Enhances vascular function and elasticity.

Lowers blood pressure through improved circulation.

Supports heart health by reducing stress on the cardiovascular system.

4. Strengthened Immune System

Exposure to cold water can boost white blood cell production, enhancing the body’s ability to fight off infections. Regular use of cold plunge tubs may improve long-term immune resilience.

Scientific Evidence: A study in PLOS ONE found that regular cold exposure increased the levels of circulating immune cells, potentially enhancing the body’s defense mechanisms.

5. Skin Health and Anti-Aging

Cold water tightens pores and promotes collagen production, contributing to healthier, more youthful-looking skin. From traditional Finnish saunas to the latest innovations in wellness, heat therapy has become a cornerstone of health routines worldwide. Among these innovations, infrared saunas stand out for their unique ability to provide deep heat penetration, delivering numerous health benefits in a comfortable, accessible way.

In this guide, we will delve into everything you need to know about infrared saunas. From understanding how they work to exploring their health benefits, comparing them with traditional saunas, and evaluating the best options for home use, this article is your go-to resource for harnessing the power of infrared sauna therapy.

What Is an Infrared Sauna?

Definition and Basics

An infrared sauna uses infrared light to create heat. Unlike traditional saunas, which rely on heating the air around you, infrared saunas use electromagnetic radiation to directly heat your body. This method allows for a more targeted and efficient experience, with temperatures ranging from 100°F to 150°F—lower than the intense 185°F to 195°F typical of traditional saunas.

The Science Behind Infrared Technology

Infrared saunas operate using near, mid, or far-infrared wavelengths. Each wavelength penetrates the body at different depths:

Near-infrared: Penetrates the skin’s surface to enhance cell repair and regeneration.

Mid-infrared: Targets soft tissues, improving circulation and joint flexibility.

Far-infrared: Reaches deep into the body to promote detoxification and reduce inflammation.

This unique combination allows for a holistic approach to wellness, offering benefits that traditional saunas can’t fully replicate.

Health Benefits of Infrared Saunas

Infrared saunas are not just a luxury; they offer numerous evidence-backed health benefits that cater to a wide range of wellness goals.

1. Detoxification

Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways of eliminating toxins. Infrared saunas enhance this process by inducing a deep, detoxifying sweat at a cellular level. Studies suggest that infrared therapy can help remove heavy metals, environmental pollutants, and other toxins more effectively than traditional saunas. This makes them particularly beneficial for individuals exposed to high levels of environmental toxins or those undergoing detox programs.

2. Improved Circulation and Cardiovascular Health

Infrared heat increases blood flow by dilating blood vessels, which improves circulation and cardiovascular function. Some research indicates that regular sauna use can mimic the effects of moderate cardiovascular exercise, making it a great option for individuals with mobility issues. Enhanced circulation also aids in faster healing of wounds and injuries.

3. Pain Relief and Muscle Recovery

For those suffering from chronic pain conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia, infrared saunas provide soothing heat that reduces inflammation and alleviates discomfort. The deep-penetrating heat can reach joints and muscles, promoting relaxation and faster recovery. Athletes benefit greatly from infrared saunas, as they help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness, making them an essential part of post-workout recovery routines.

4. Enhanced Skin Health

Infrared saunas stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and can help reduce acne, wrinkles, and other blemishes. The deep sweat cleanses pores, leaving skin glowing and rejuvenated. The improved circulation to the skin also helps in faster healing of scars and blemishes, making it a natural and effective skincare routine.

5. Stress Reduction and Mental Health

The gentle heat of infrared saunas promotes relaxation, lowers cortisol levels, and boosts mood by releasing endorphins. Many users report reduced anxiety and an improved sense of well-being after regular use. This makes infrared saunas a great tool for managing daily stress, improving focus, and achieving better emotional balance.

6. Weight Loss

Infrared saunas increase heart rate and metabolic activity, helping you burn calories without physical exertion. While not a replacement for exercise, studies suggest that a single session can burn up to 600 calories. The metabolic boost from infrared heat also aids in weight management and can complement a healthy lifestyle.

7. Immune System Boost

Regular use of infrared saunas may enhance the immune system by increasing core body temperature and activating the production of white blood cells. This can help the body fight off illnesses more effectively. For those prone to colds and infections, infrared therapy offers a proactive approach to maintaining better health.

8. Better Sleep

Infrared saunas can help regulate your body’s natural circadian rhythm, improving sleep quality. The relaxing heat promotes deep rest and can be especially beneficial for those with insomnia. Regular sessions can also help reduce nighttime awakenings, leading to more restorative sleep.

9. Hormonal Balance

Emerging evidence suggests that infrared saunas may support hormonal balance by reducing cortisol levels and promoting the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. This can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing hormonal fluctuations or individuals managing chronic stress.

10. Anti-Aging Benefits

In addition to improving skin health, infrared saunas promote cellular repair and reduce oxidative stress. These effects can slow down signs of aging, both internally and externally, contributing to a more youthful appearance and better overall vitality.

Types of Infrared Saunas

There are several types of infrared saunas to suit different needs and budgets:

1. Portable Infrared Saunas

Compact and affordable, these saunas are perfect for those with limited space. They often resemble tents and are easy to set up and store.

2. Standalone Infrared Saunas

These are traditional wooden cabin saunas equipped with infrared technology. They’re ideal for home installations and offer a luxurious spa-like experience.

3. Infrared Sauna Blankets

These portable, sleeping bag-like devices are a popular choice for people who want the benefits of an infrared sauna without a large investment or space requirement.

4. Hybrid Saunas

Combining infrared and traditional heating methods, hybrid saunas offer the best of both worlds, catering to users with varying preferences.

Infrared Saunas vs. Traditional Saunas

1. Temperature and Comfort

Infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature, making them more comfortable for people who find traditional saunas too intense.

2. The more you have the faster and further you can go. When you run out of gas you have to find a gas station very quickly or the journey will end. Behind our motivation is our emotions, the steering wheel that leads us to different places. Without the emotions we wouldn’t start driving in the first place, the motivation is just the force that gets us there.

There’s a sea of diets out there on a spectrum from straight out dangerous to super healthy, but the thing most of them have in common is that they don't work in the long run for the majority of people.

The reason why is not necessarily because of the diet itself, but because it’s not specifically made for you.

Diets don’t take into consideration your emotional wellbeing, your sleeping rhythm, your job, your hobbies, your workout routines or social events.

Instead you have to change your lifestyle and routines according to the diet, when it should be the other way around.

It takes a huge amount of motivation and energy to follow a diet. You need to plan ahead, go to the store, prepare meals, follow different recipes and cut out a lot of foods you like.

With diets often comes forbidden food lists and regulations. You may have to bring your own meal to work when your co-workers go out for lunch, make a separate meal for your family, watch when others enjoy a delicious desert while you’re sipping on your tea.

Because you have to make so many changes at the same time and quickly, it requires to keep that motivation on a very high level, in order to maintain the diet. Our energy levels, hormones and emotions change all the time which has a direct impact on the motivation. Sometimes all it takes is a bad day to throw you off the diet, which in turn leads to feelings of guilt, failure and in the end makes you want to give up.

Imagine having a bad nights sleep, a horrible day at work, and a fight with a family member. It’s Friday and you’re invited to a birthday party.

The motivation to keep going is low that day. Everyone else is having drinks and cake, and you think “oh well, I’ve been so good the last few days, had a horrible day, it can’t hurt to have some cake”.

The stress and “hunger” hormone is high and your body is craving that sugar. Before you know it you had way more cake then you planned and slowly the guilt starts kicking in. Guilt is like the little monster that ruins everything. It often leads to jumping between all or nothing. Many get stuck in a cycle of emotional eating because of guilt. After a “all the wat slip” you need even more motivation to pick yourself up again and continue the diet. The more you slip the harder it gets.

The other problem with many weight loss diets is that if you don’t eat enough, your metabolism will slow down and your body “thinks you’re starving”. Sure, you will lose weight (a combination of fluids, muscles and fat) but your body is also trying to hold on to that fat and gain fat when possible.

So once you get off the diet and start to eat normally you will put on weight more easily and sometimes you end up weighing more than before the diet.

So, why can some people stay on diets for months or even as a life style? In order for a diet to work for a longer period of time you’re motivation level has to be very high and stay high. What gives fuel to the motivation is something that you feel extremely emotional about.

For example someone getting married, an actor getting ready for a role, a bikini fitness or body builder going to compete, a boxer who needs to make the weight before a match or someone who needs to lose weight before a surgery.

The question is, what happens once this event is over? I´ve seen women going on extreme diets a few months before their wedding. Going on that honeymoon, gaining the weight back when they stop dieting, then trying to go back to the diet but failing. The reason why is because there no high motivation goal there anymore. Why jump in that car and drive thousands of miles without having a destination.

The good news is, you don’t need a diet to lose weight. You don’t need forbidden food lists. It’s absolutely possible to heal the relationship with food, find freedom and still reach your goals.

Of course it doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want when you want, just sitting on the couch. It’s about finding the right balance.

The plan needs to be made for you, according to your routines, your work, social events, hobbies etc. and there has to be flexibility.

Write the goals in stone but the plans in sand. You can mark out the destination on the map but there are many different roads that will take you there.

For a long lasting change, we need to build in routines. Routines are something that don’t require much motivation or energy.

It’s like brushing your teeth. When we were kids it took some time and maybe some tantrums to learn, but now, even if we had a bad day, we still brush our teeth.

My Client Mia

My client Mia, couldn’t believe her ears when I told her there are no forbidden foods and she won’t have to walk around hungry.

Based on her food diary she handed in, I could see what the obvious problem for the weight gain was. The amount of carbs in the evening after work.

However, when someone has a weakness for certain unhealthy foods, its the last thing I focus on. It’s like saying don’t think about a pink elephant. It quickly causes an inner struggle. Instead I like to focus on adding healthy things rather than taking away the trigger foods.

I want to find the reason behind the problem. My client was stuck in the cycle of overeating in the evening, then feeling guilty and therefore try to cut the calories and meals the next day and the cycle would repeat. She didn’t eat breakfast, and by lunch time she was so hungry she would over eat, then again go many hours without food and start binge eating once she got home from work.

It’s a very common pattern. Whether it’s intentional or not. If you don’t eat balanced and enough during the day your body will throw a tantrum in the evening.

You’re not only fighting against emotional urge to eat after a stressful day, you’re also fighting against your hormones. The hormones always win. They’re the strongest force in our bodies. Without them we don’t wake up in the morning ´, we don’t fall asleep, we don’t sweat or feel cold, we don’t cry or feel rage, we don’t feel hungry or full. If the emotions are the steering wheel the hormones is the gas and break pedal. We need to work with them and not against them.

When you let your self get to the stage of being very hungry, it’s too late. Your brain will go for the quickest energy source possible, which is white carbs and sugar. The hunger hormone (ghrelin) is high, we eat faster and before the “full” hormone (leptin) has a change to even it out you have already eaten twice as much as you need.

So instead of focusing on Mias obvious cause to the weight gain, I focused on what happens before. How to prevent it from happening.

During the first session I gave her two tasks, based on foods she likes. We added a breakfast (with a couple of options) and I told her she can eat whatever she wants for lunch but fill half the plate with vegetables. It’s important that the changes are simple and

not too many at the same time. If they require a low level of motivation you’re more likely to stick to them even on the bad days.

I gave her two weeks to work on these changes, and it already brought in results. Because of the breakfast her blood sugar was steady until lunch and she was satisfied with one plate instead of two.

When it was time for more changes she had already repeated the former two steps for 14 days and built in a routine.

Even if she had a bad day the breakfast and vegetables at lunch were already automatic and not too hard of a task to keep up with.

Step by step we changed her eating habits, but keeping the flexibility with food options. After a month I finally started to look at the original “obvious problem” and by that time there wasn’t much left to fix.

Because of the breakfast, lunch and snacks her blood sugar levels were steady and she didn’t have the same cravings as before when she came home from work. After the first month she had already dropped 2 kg.

So what about the unhealthier foods? If you have social events coming up or love that sushi buffet or that ice cream, make room for that and celebrate it. Make it a part of the journey. A positive event to look forward to without guilt. Of course if you eat unhealthy foods every day it’s not going to work. But if you eat 70% well, theres room to eat unhealthier foods 30% of the time and still reach your goals.

If you have a big dinner with all the meals and drinks included, plan ahead, and work around it. You can bring in an extra training, making healthier choices and eat a bit less carbs during the day.

The most important thing of all is to learn how to get back to your eating routines the next day and continue. Routines don’t mean you have to eat the same thing every day, there should always be options, it’s more about the rhythm and the balance of protein, carbs and fat in the foods you eat.

Life is meant to be enjoyed, when you have flexibility in your eating, it has a big effect on the emotional health and your nervous system can relax. To be able to eat all kinds of foods without feeling guilty is freedom.

Mia lost 15 kg of fat within a year and gained muscles. She doesn’t need my guidance anymore, she has become independent and free and I’m extremely proud of her. If she goes on a holiday and gains a bit of weight, she goes back to hear healthy routines when she gets home, goes back to training and the weight will balance itself out again.

Your Relationship With Your Body

Before going on a weight loss journey, whether it’s with a coach or a diet from the internet, the absolutely most important question is why? Is it for yourself, for health reasons, because of pressure from the outside or someone else who wants you to? If it’s not for yourself, then why do you feel the need to change?

Unfortunately we live in extremely difficult times when it comes to beauty ideals, thanks to the internet and social media. There is a huge pressure on how to look. Now it’s not enough to be skinny anymore, you have to be very fit, still have big boobs, a big butt but a small waist. Men have to look like body builders. The more we chase perfection the further away from happiness we get.

This is something I work on with my clients a lot. How they view their own body, how they see themselves. It’s a key part of the journey to success. Working from the inside out, instead of the outside in.

If we constantly criticise and think negatively about ourselves and our looks, even if we lose that weight we may still not be satisfied because our brains are wired that way. We need to break that negative feedback loop. It takes time and work, but this part of the weight loss journey is the most important and makes it so much more easier and enjoyable when you learn to accept your body and love yourself.

We forget to thank our body, be kind to our body. It’s our home that will carry us through our whole life, so we better treat it well with love and kindness.

My Journey

Before I became a Personal Trainer, Wellness- and Nutrition Coach in 2015, I was super strict with myself. All or nothing.

I’ve trained my whole life and come from a family of high achievers.

For years worked out 5-9 times a week, mostly martial arts but also jogging and strength training. I vwas very strict strict with what I ate and always felt wasn’t doing enough. Always aiming for perfection. It was like I was trapped in a self-made jail. It wasn’t until I finally hit the wall and fell to the bottom that I started to see clearly and could finally heal.

My wall was over training syndrome and a mental burn out. My metabolism completely shut down and I gained 12 kg very quickly. I wasn’t allowed to train for months and even if I tried I couldn’t. Even the lightest training would make my pulse hit the roof. Training was my identity. Not training caused a big empty hole in me and I needed to discover who I was without it. I had to take the bull by the horn and stop running away from myself.

It took me a long inner journey to break that pattern. I decided I wanted to go to the root of the problem. I wanted to find out and learn as much as I could about nutrition and emotional wellbeing. I was hungry for knowledge. That’s what lead me to Nutrition and Wellness Coaching.

As I was studying I started to eat and live according to my studies. I was still 10 kg over my previous weight. I cut down on the training and started to eat more. After a couple of

months my body reacted, my metabolism started to work again and within 7 months I had lost extra kg I had gained. I couldn’t believe it. All these years I thought constantly being on a diet and restrict yourself is the way to lose or keep the weight, but no. Training less and eating more was what my body needed.

For 10 years now I lived with freedom, I listen to my body, eat when I’m hungry, stop eating when I’m full and give my body what it needs. I’ve kept my weight steady (+- 2 kg). The over training syndrome was one of the most important lessons. It led me to where I am today and has helped me help hundreds of clients through out the years to reach their goals in a healthy way and I hope I will be able to help many more in the future.

About The Author

Jessica Wolff is a Personal Trainer, Nutrition- and Wellness Coach. However, our mental and physical health are connected, working together to keep us happy and healthy. Seeing a mental health specialist, such as a therapist or psychiatrist, might be your priority, but taking steps to improve your wellbeing alongside this psychological work can be helpful and encouraging.

Maybe you are currently in psychological treatment .. or you are on a waitlist for treatment, or even beginning to consider your treatment options. Desiring to improve your complete wellbeing is possible at any level of your trauma-healing process. Working with a Well-Me-Right expert can be an extremely useful addition to your healing journey. Wellness practices can be utilized to overcome trauma indirectly and directly. The aspects of the Wellness Wheel: intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, financial, emotional, environmental, and financial wellness; are all affected by the impacts of trauma. So what is so encouraging is that we can also power-up 🔥 all of these wellness aspects to help us fight the impacts of trauma that affect our daily lives! With severe trauma, much more than wellness work will likely be necessary to help you fully heal and feel and act your best, such as seeking psychological help. However, taking steps towards all-around wellness while venturing on your healing journey can ease the difficulties of trauma healing, and it is helpful to utilize a wellness expert that specializes in working with clients with such trauma.

Trauma-sensitive wellness coaching is, dare I say, essential to your proper healing. When experiencing daily effects of severe trauma, seeing a wellness expert without trauma-sensitive coaching is like going to an ayahuasca retreat that does not include an integration follow-up. Yes, the trip may have been mind-changing, but some oomph is needed for this mind-change to be positive and lasting. The same lesson applies here, severe trauma in the human body requires careful coaching or there is the possibility for the individual to be further hurt or relapse into old stress reactions. Let’s give one simple example: YOGA CLASSES. Who would have thought? Isn’t yoga supposed to be calming, relaxing, and healing? Why would I need trauma-sensitive yoga classes?

Okay.. having a specialized trauma-sensitive yoga teacher is not an absolute end-all be-all necessity. However, consideration of severe trauma during a yoga class can be make-or-break towards trauma healing. For example, yoga can include lots of hip-opening poses, yet the hips are one of the main areas where trauma is held. Individuals experiencing PTSD are likely to have very tight hips and/or experience emotional upheavals when practicing hip-opening poses in a yoga class. Having a trauma-sensitive yoga teacher not only can give you the proper space and support to process these upheavals, but they can better prepare your body, and thus your nervous system, to move into these impactful poses. I have a few friends with PTSD who have relayed negative yoga experiences due to heavy emotions arising and a lack of support during a class. Or, their experience was on the positive end due to receiving personalized yoga therapy as a part of their treatment. If you experience PTSD, it is important when working with any trained professional, to have a consideration for your sensitivities.

Receiving these special considerations does not mean that you have to stop going to your favorite yoga studio or pay big bucks for a specialized wellness program. If you are on a budget while navigating your healing journey, don’t worry, you can still receive the care that you deserve. In addition, your trauma experiences may be a sensitive subject and you are not looking to let the whole neighborhood know. Here are some tips to stay discrete and low budget💰🙈 when adding wellness practices to your healing journey.

Go to a “regular” yoga (or other wellness) class.

Options…

Let the teacher know that you carry severe trauma.

Be discrete and decline the physical adjustments offered.

Be discrete and say that you have a physical pain that does not allow you to do certain (triggering) poses.

Ask for advice from your psychologist/psychiatrist

It is important to let your doctor(s) know the other practices that you are pairing with your treatments, and they will often be able to offer advice for how to not trigger your trauma during these, or how to deal with triggers. Plus, it is possible that the doctor(s) will say that these practices are safe not to be triggering.

Take sessions with a newer trauma-sensitive wellness expert.

We tend to think that seeing a professional new to the coaching scene may be a bad idea and that they “do not know what they are doing”. However, upcoming experts are a great option to stay on budget while receiving quality service. Likely, these experts have the same training and learning experiences as more recognized coaches, and just need a warm-up in their coaching confidence. Additionally, if recently trained, these experts might have more up-to-date content, research, and technological knowledge from their education. Give a new expert a try, they are likely working very hard to make their coaching for clients as successful as possible.

Educate yourself.

While seeing a wellness professional opens a straight and secure healing route, there are many options for self-education. Self-education on wellness practices will open up unlimited interesting and introspective paths; which can be a fun adventure into new subjects, but possibly confusing as well. However, you know yourself best and whether or not the budget-friendly option of a meandering self-exploration process is right for you. If you decide to pursue your wellness journey with an expert, you can still self-educate yourself – overtime, you will likely see your personal wellness knowledge bank becoming expansive and deep🧐. Below are some domains where you can dip into the subjects of wellness.

Read books.

Listen to podcasts.

Follow social media accounts.

Find and attend community wellness workshops and events.

Make friends with like-minded, trustworthy people (maybe from the above⬆️ community workshops) & discuss wellness together!

Wellness Practices/Sessions That Directly Heal Trauma

Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy differs from traditional yoga classes by its personalized and targeting nature. Yoga therapists are more highly trained than general yoga teachers, with an added education in mental health issues. The yoga therapist will utilize conversational and body movement aspects in tandem to strategically aid your specific condition. Yoga therapy is a great up-and-coming wellness session for trauma healing. Well-Me-Right currently has a range of yoga therapist sessions available – have a good search through the options and see what therapists align with you personally, and book a discovery call (when possible).

Meditation

Meditation works in an opposite, yet parallel healing route to psychotherapy treatment. Psychotherapy treatment operates by “dredging up” trauma history to uncover and clearly process these events1. Meditation works to heal trauma in a “trickle-down” method by slowly digging deeper into specific brain regions and clearing out the muck. With consistent, long-term meditation practice, you will slowly find yourself becoming more calm and at-peace, but the exact areas of healing will not be clear. Guided meditation is recommended for beginners, as well as working with a meditation coach2.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness involves, you guessed it – being mindful. Filling our daily tasks with more mindfulness allows us to be more aware of what is happening inside of our bodies and minds. When we are aware of the cues from our body when we think a certain thought, feel a distinct emotion, or see a certain person or place, the connection between our mind and body becomes more clear. Clarity and distinguishment can greatly aid trauma recovery by not only making our daily experiences more meaningful and pleasurable, but by empowering us on our healing journey as we improve our understanding of ourselves. Increasing your daily mindfulness can be incredibly simple, and mindfulness coaches are also a valuable option.

Easy Daily Switches for Mindfulness

Don’t do ANYTHING else while you eat. Avoid watching, chatting, or listening to anything while eating. Be present and mindfully enjoy your meal.

Doing chores… do the chores. Same goes as above⬆️: when you are doing chores such as cleaning, folding laundry, washing dishes, do just that - slowly and carefully. When working out or enjoying nature. Same goes here too… do absolutely nothing else but the main action you are doing.

As you can see, multi-tasking is not a part of mindfulness. Doing only one thing at a time, especially our least favorite tasks, can seem boring and monotonous at first. However, over time, mindfulness will greet us with a fuller	experience in which we almost feel like we are living longer because each day is so much more eventful and precious. Remember, before handheld technology, this was the normal occurrence for humans.

Self-Care

Low self-esteem and a paired lack of self-care are often side-effects of experiencing severe trauma. Introducing self-compassion into our lives is an important step to overcome the lack of inherent worth that may have been ingrained into you through trauma. By adding self-care practices to your life, you can begin to heal the aching pieces of yourself that have throughout your life (or during traumatic periods), by yourself or others, missed out on being shown unconditional love. Improving your self-care can help increase your self-esteem and self-worth by demonstrating that you have the power and strength to heal. Plus, self-care activities are usually calming and joyful. Choosing your self-care plan involves reflecting on your interests and the activities that are comforting and fun for you. Read over this list of self-care examples and choose what matches your interests, brainstorming other personal options along the way.

Self-Cares Ideas

Take yourself on a date💃.

Do an activity alone that you have

been waiting to do with someone else.

Such as seeing a movie that you have been excited to see,

visiting a garden or park, seeing a band, or trying a new restaurant.

Don’t wait for someone else to show you the love that you deserve, treat yourself🫶.

Show love ❤️ to your body. This is not about getting fancy and expensive treatments in order to look good for others, but taking the time to give your body care and attention.

Give yourself a deep foot massage

Nourish your body with nutritious, filling meals.

Go to a yoga class.. especially yin or rejuvenative yoga.

Take a warm, lush shower🚿 and rub your muscles with lotion afterwards.

Take time to give yourself a facial. Buy or make a face mask and give your face a gentle massage throughout.

Set boundaries 🙅. Time to release that people-pleasing tendency that has been burning you out. Reflect upon your friendships, relationships, and family connections. Has anyone consistently been crossing a boundary? Do they support you? Have you been communicating your boundaries? Do you separate from individuals when they do not respect your boundaries… or do you give them chance after chance? Now is the time to take a good look at your support circle and if they are really supporting you or dragging you down. In addition, you might see a personal problem with communicating your boundaries. Drawing boundaries communicates to others that you have self-respect and deserve (of course) to be treated right.

Become your most authentic self 🤩. In the process of pleasing people we can forget about supporting our own wants and needs. Deciding to heal is a great first step to start prioritizing yourself. During this time, it is wise to re-evaluate your lifestyle and if your daily activities align with your true self. Have you just been melding with the activities and interests of your current or past partners or friends? What makes you happy and is important to you? The options are endless. What educational topics do you want to delve deeper into? What sports are fun and exciting for you? What music puts a smile on your face? Every single day 24/7, even during work hours, can be enhanced with your passions and pursuits! Put yourself first by doing the things that bring you joy.

Thanks for reading! From wrinkles and fine lines to acne and pigmentation, these devices allow for professional-grade care right in the comfort of your home. By blending convenience with proven science, LED masks offer a practical, accessible solution for improving skin health. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive into how these masks work, their many benefits, and why they could be the perfect addition to your skincare regimen.

What Are LED Masks?

LED (Light Emitting Diode) masks are wearable devices that use light therapy to target various skin concerns. Initially developed by NASA to aid in wound healing and cell regeneration, this technology has found a permanent place in dermatology. These masks work by emitting specific wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular processes, addressing concerns such as acne, redness, and aging.

With options ranging from single-wavelength devices to multi-light masks capable of tackling multiple concerns simultaneously, LED masks cater to all skin types and budgets. They offer a convenient, user-friendly way to achieve results traditionally delivered in a dermatologist’s office.

How Do LED Masks Work?

LED (Light Emitting Diode) masks use non-invasive light energy to penetrate different layers of the skin, delivering targeted benefits without heat or damage. Each wavelength of light corresponds to a specific color, with each color designed to address unique skin concerns. By harnessing these wavelengths, LED masks effectively enhance the skin’s natural processes. Here’s a deeper dive into the mechanism and benefits of each type of light therapy:

Red Light Therapy

Mechanism: Red light penetrates deeply into the dermal layers, where it stimulates fibroblast cells to boost collagen and elastin production. These proteins are critical for maintaining skin’s structure and elasticity.

Benefits: This therapy is highly effective for combating signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. It also enhances blood circulation, giving the skin a more radiant and youthful appearance.

Additional Uses: Red light is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a good option for soothing irritated or stressed skin.

Blue Light Therapy

Mechanism: Blue light targets the skin’s surface, where it interacts with acne-causing bacteria, specifically Propionibacterium acnes. The bacteria absorb the light, triggering a reaction that destroys them.

Benefits: Ideal for acne-prone skin, blue light therapy reduces active breakouts, prevents future pimples, and helps regulate sebum production, keeping skin less oily and congested.

Additional Uses: Blue light also has a soothing effect on the skin, which can help reduce redness associated with inflammation.

Green Light Therapy

Mechanism: Green light focuses on the melanin-producing layers of the skin, disrupting the overproduction of pigment and helping to fade discoloration.

Benefits: This therapy is excellent for those with uneven skin tone, sunspots, age spots, or hyperpigmentation. It brightens the complexion and helps restore a more uniform skin tone.

Additional Uses: Green light therapy can also help to calm and balance the skin, reducing stress-induced redness or irritation.

Amber Light Therapy

Mechanism: Amber light works on the skin’s surface and superficial layers to calm and soothe sensitive or irritated skin.

Benefits: It reduces redness, swelling, and inflammation, making it a great choice for people with rosacea, sensitive skin, or post-treatment recovery.

Additional Uses: Amber light therapy also stimulates lymphatic drainage, helping to detoxify the skin and reduce puffiness.

LED masks stimulate the skin’s cellular energy by increasing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which is the fuel that powers cellular repair and renewal. This boost accelerates the skin’s natural processes, such as collagen synthesis, cell turnover, and tissue repair. Unlike other treatments, LED masks do not rely on heat or UV light, making them safe for regular use across all skin types, including sensitive skin.

By integrating LED masks into your skincare routine, you can achieve healthier, more vibrant skin while addressing specific concerns tailored to your needs. With consistent use, the benefits of light therapy compound over time, making these devices a must-have tool in modern skincare.

Types of LED Masks

LED masks come in several types, each designed to address specific skin concerns by using different wavelengths of light. The choice of mask depends on individual skincare goals, as various wavelengths penetrate the skin at different depths to achieve unique benefits.

Red Light Therapy Masks

Red light masks are designed to penetrate deeply into the dermal layers of the skin. This type of therapy stimulates collagen and elastin production, which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin elasticity. It also enhances blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to skin cells, and diminishes inflammation, making it a great option for sensitive or reactive skin. These masks are ideal for those seeking to combat signs of aging, improve skin texture, or restore a youthful glow.

Blue Light Therapy Masks

These masks operate at a shallower depth, targeting the skin’s surface to eliminate acne-causing bacteria, specifically Propionibacterium acnes. This therapy is effective at reducing and preventing breakouts, controlling excess sebum production to reduce oiliness, and minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores for smoother skin. It is particularly suitable for individuals with acne-prone skin or those dealing with frequent breakouts.

Near-Infrared Therapy Masks

These use light that penetrates even deeper than red light, reaching muscles, tissues, and joints. This advanced therapy promotes cellular regeneration and repair, making it highly effective for accelerating healing after surgical or dermatological treatments. It can also relieve chronic skin conditions such as rosacea or psoriasis by reducing inflammation and help alleviate muscle pain and stiffness, providing additional wellness benefits. These masks are ideal for individuals recovering from treatments, managing chronic conditions, or seeking comprehensive rejuvenation for both skin and body.

Multi-Light Therapy Masks

Ccombine multiple wavelengths of light, offering the flexibility to switch between treatments or layer them for a tailored experience. These masks are highly versatile, addressing a wide range of concerns such as acne, fine lines, and discoloration. They provide a comprehensive approach to improving overall skin health, as users can adjust settings to suit their skin type and immediate needs. This makes them an excellent choice for individuals looking for an all-in-one solution to tackle various skincare goals over time.

When selecting an LED mask, it is important to consider features such as intensity levels, which allow customization for different skin sensitivities and conditions, as well as comfort and fit to ensure even light distribution and ease of use. Many advanced masks also include convenience features like app control or built-in timers, adding to their functionality. Safety certifications and clinical testing are essential to ensure the device is suitable for at-home use. By choosing the right type of LED mask, you can achieve professional-grade skincare results in the comfort of your own home.

Key Benefits of LED Masks

LED masks offer a wide range of benefits that go beyond surface-level skincare, addressing deeper concerns for overall skin health and even contributing to mental well-being. Here’s an expanded look at their key advantages:

Improved Skin Health

LED masks contribute to overall skin wellness by strengthening the skin barrier, which is vital for protecting against environmental stressors and retaining moisture. The enhanced barrier function leads to improved hydration levels, resulting in firmer and more supple skin. With consistent use, LED therapy refines skin texture, leaving it smoother and more resilient while promoting a healthy, radiant glow.

Acne and Breakout Management

Blue light therapy is an effective, non-invasive solution for managing acne and preventing future breakouts. By targeting and destroying acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface, it reduces inflammation associated with active blemishes. Unlike traditional treatments that rely on harsh chemicals, blue light offers a gentle alternative that minimizes irritation, making it suitable for sensitive or reactive skin. Over time, regular sessions help regulate oil production, keeping pores clear and skin looking balanced and healthy.

Anti-Aging Effects

Red light therapy is a standout for its anti-aging properties. By stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, it works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This process also improves skin elasticity, helping to minimize sagging and restore youthful contours to the face. Beyond its aesthetic benefits, red light therapy enhances blood circulation, which nourishes skin cells and promotes a revitalized, glowing complexion.

Accelerated Healing

Near-infrared therapy plays a crucial role in speeding up the skin’s natural healing processes. It is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from procedures like microneedling, laser treatments, or even managing chronic conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. By reducing redness and irritation, near-infrared therapy helps soothe the skin, promoting quicker recovery and leaving it looking calmer and healthier.

Muscle and Pain Relief

The benefits of LED therapy extend beyond the skin to address underlying discomfort in facial muscles. Near-infrared and red light therapy can alleviate tension in areas prone to strain, such as the jawline and temples, making it useful for managing TMJ disorders and minor headaches. The penetrating warmth relaxes facial muscles, providing soothing relief and improving overall comfort.

Enhanced Relaxation

Using an LED mask is not just a physical treatment but a mental one as well. The gentle, calming light and the meditative experience of sitting still for a session contribute to stress reduction and mental relaxation. Incorporating LED therapy into a self-care routine can serve as a moment of tranquility in a busy day, helping users feel more balanced and rejuvenated.

By integrating LED masks into your skincare routine, you can achieve a harmonious blend of physical and emotional benefits, making it a powerful tool for both beauty and wellness.

LED Masks vs. Laser Treatments

LED Masks:

Non-Invasive: Gentle on the skin and safe for frequent use.

Cost-Effective: A one-time purchase for long-term benefits.

Convenience: Easy to use at home without requiring recovery time.

Laser Treatments:

High Precision: Ideal for severe skin concerns like scars and deep wrinkles.

Professional Application: Requires skilled supervision.

Expensive: Multiple sessions can be costly.

Downtime: Often involves post-treatment recovery.

Professional vs. At-Home Devices

Professional LED Treatments

Faster Results: Intense sessions provide noticeable changes in fewer treatments.

Customizable Plans: Often combined with other advanced skincare techniques.

Higher Cost: Ideal for targeted concerns but may not suit every budget.

At-Home LED Masks

Gradual Improvements: Perfect for maintaining skin health over time.

Affordable and Accessible: A practical option for daily skincare routines.

Flexible Use: Fits into busy schedules without requiring appointments.

How to Use LED Masks Safely

Cleanse Thoroughly: Start with a clean face to maximize light penetration.

Choose the Right Settings: Select the appropriate light for your concerns.

Follow Guidelines: Use for the recommended time (typically 10-20 minutes).

Apply Skincare Afterward: Enhance results with serums or moisturizers.

Stay Consistent: Regular use ensures the best outcomes.

Common Myths and Misconceptions

Myth 1: LED Masks Work Instantly: Visible improvements take weeks of consistent use.

Myth 2: All Masks Are the Same: Quality, design, and effectiveness vary widely.

Myth 3: Unsafe for Regular Use: FDA-approved devices are safe when used correctly.

Myth 4: Professional Treatments Are Superior: At-home masks are effective for mild to moderate concerns.

Myth 5: Overuse Accelerates Results: Exceeding recommended usage can irritate skin.

Conclusion

LED masks are a versatile and revolutionary addition to modern skincare. They empower individuals with the tools to address a wide range of skin issues—acne, aging, pigmentation, and more—all from the comfort of home. By leveraging advanced light therapy, these masks bridge the gap between professional treatments and accessible daily care.

For those with severe concerns, professional treatments might still be necessary, but LED masks offer an excellent maintenance option. With regular use and the right device, you can achieve noticeable improvements in skin health and confidence. Whether you’re new to skincare or an experienced enthusiast, investing in an LED mask can be a transformative step toward radiant, healthier skin.

Disclaimer

The benefits of LED masks are based on scientific studies and user experiences; however, individual results may vary. The intricate and dynamic ecosystem within your digestive tract, known as the gut microbiome, plays a pivotal role in your well-being. This article will delve into the importance of gut health, the role of the gut microbiome, and introduce the concept of 30 plant points—a strategy designed to enhance gut health through dietary diversity. We'll also explore the benefits of prebiotics and probiotics in maintaining a balanced gut microbiome, supported by research from scientific sources.

Introduction to Gut Health

Gut health refers to the balance and function of the microorganisms living in the digestive tract. These microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and even mental health. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can lead to various health issues, including digestive disorders, weakened immunity, and mental health problems.

Understanding the Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tract. This diverse community of microbes plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. The gut microbiome is involved in numerous bodily functions, including:

Digestion: Gut bacteria help break down complex carbohydrates, fibers, and proteins that the body cannot digest independently. They produce enzymes that aid in the digestive process and enhance nutrient absorption.

Immune Function: About 70-80% of the body's immune cells reside in the gut. The gut microbiome helps regulate immune responses and protects against harmful pathogens.

Metabolism: Gut bacteria influence metabolic processes, including fat storage, regulation of blood sugar levels, and production of vitamins like B12 and K.

Mental Health: The gut and brain communicate through the gut-brain axis. Gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are essential for mood regulation.

The Impact of Diet on Gut Health

Diet is one of the most significant factors influencing the gut microbiome. A diverse and balanced diet rich in plant-based foods can promote a healthy gut microbiome. Consuming a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes provides essential nutrients and fiber that feed beneficial gut bacteria. This dietary diversity is central to the 30 plant points concept.

What Are 30 Plant Points?

The idea of 30 plant points is to consume at least 30 different plant-based foods each week. This approach encourages dietary diversity, which is crucial for a healthy and diverse gut microbiome. Plant points include:

- Fruits

- Vegetables

- Whole grains

- Nuts and seeds

- Herbs and spices

- Legumes

The goal is to introduce a wide range of plants into your diet, as each type of plant provides different fibers and nutrients that support various beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Benefits of 30 Plant Points

Enhanced Gut Diversity: A diverse diet fosters a diverse gut microbiome, which is linked to better digestion, stronger immunity, and improved overall health.

Increased Nutrient Intake: Different plants provide different nutrients, ensuring a balanced intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Improved Digestive Health: Fiber-rich foods help maintain regular bowel movements and prevent digestive disorders.

Better Immune Function: A diverse gut microbiome enhances immune responses and reduces inflammation.

Boosted Mental Health: A healthy gut can improve mood and cognitive function by optimizing the production and regulation of neurotransmitters.

Tips for Achieving 30 Plant Points

Mix Up Your Meals: Incorporate a variety of vegetables in your salads, soups, and main dishes.

Snack Smart: Choose nuts, seeds, and fruits as snacks to add more plant points. 3. Explore Whole Grains: Try different whole grains like quinoa, farro, bulgur, and barley.

Herbs and Spices: Add herbs and spices to your dishes not only for flavor but also to boost your plant points.

Experiment with New Recipes: Challenge yourself to try new plant-based recipes every week.

Sample Meal Plan to Maximize Plant Points

Breakfast

- Overnight Oats: Oats, chia seeds, almond milk, blueberries, a sprinkle of cinnamon and flaxseeds, and a dollop of Greek yogurt for added protein.

Lunch

- Quinoa Salad: Quinoa, chickpeas, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, parsley, mint, a lemon-tahini dressing, and grilled salmon for protein.

Dinner

- Vegetable Stir-Fry: Brown rice, broccoli, bell peppers, snap peas, carrots, garlic, ginger, and tofu with a soy sauce dressing.

Snacks

- Trail Mix: A mix of almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate squares or chips.

Dessert

- Fruit Salad: Mango, kiwi, strawberries, and pomegranate seeds.

The Role of Prebiotics and Probiotics

In addition to dietary diversity, prebiotics and probiotics are essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics serve as food for probiotics, helping them thrive and multiply. This relationship is crucial for maintaining a balanced gut microbiome, as it ensures that beneficial bacteria have the nutrients they need to flourish, thereby outcompeting harmful bacteria.

An imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the gut can lead to a condition known as dysbiosis. Dysbiosis has been linked to a range of health issues, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in prebiotics and probiotics can help prevent these conditions.

The Impact of Lifestyle on Gut Health

Beyond diet, several lifestyle factors influence gut health. Understanding these factors and making conscious choices can further enhance the balance and function of your gut microbiome.

Stress Management

Chronic stress can disrupt the gut microbiota. The body’s stress response alters gut motility, increases intestinal permeability, and affects the composition of the gut microbiome. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help manage stress and support a healthy gut.

Regular Exercise

Physical activity promotes a healthy gut by enhancing microbial diversity. Regular exercise has been shown to increase the abundance of beneficial microbial species, improve the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and enhance overall microbial diversity. Incorporating a mix of aerobic and resistance exercises into your routine can benefit your gut health.

Adequate Sleep

Quality sleep supports overall health, including gut health. Poor sleep can negatively affect the gut microbiome, leading to imbalances that impact digestion, immune function, and even mood. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep daily to support a healthy gut.

Hydration

Drinking plenty of water aids digestion and supports a healthy gut environment. Adequate hydration helps maintain the mucosal lining of the intestines and supports the balance of good bacteria in the gut. Dieting also requires mindfulness, discipline, and structure to succeed.

Now, I am not saying it needs to be ultra-complicated; however, it never really is all that easy, is it? If you feel primed and ready to go, go do it! However, there are some situations where it might be wise to delay your dieting efforts. Let's examine some diet hindrances that may be holding you back and how to address them BEFORE embracing a fat loss phase.

High Stress Levels

Example: If your diet adds more stress to an already stressful life.

Strategy: Focus on stress management techniques prior to starting a fat loss diet. These techniques will not only help prime you for a successful diet but will improve overall well-being. Some of these techniques may include physical activity, meditation, aromatherapy, reading, or any other activities that mitigate stress. Once you feel more balanced, gradually reintroduce dietary changes.

Chaotic Routine

Example: When your daily routine is very chaotic and unpredictable.

Strategy: Establish some level of consistency in your life. Start with small, manageable changes such as planning meals ahead of time or setting specific times for meals and snacks. Create a flexible meal plan that accommodates your busy schedule.

Poor Sleep Quality

Example: If your sleep quality is low and it’s causing work/life distress.

Strategy: Prioritize improving your sleep quality by setting a consistent bedtime, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and minimizing screen time before bed. Try avoiding high-fat or sugary foods before bed and prioritize a balanced dinner or light snack a couple of hours before bed. Good sleep can enhance your overall health and make it easier to stick to a diet later.

Lack of Good Habits

Example: If you're lacking good dieting habits in place.

Strategy: Focus on building healthy habits one at a time. Ask yourself, do I regularly consume fruits and vegetables? Am I drinking enough water? Do I have binge eating episodes? These are habits that should be worked on as soon as possible. Sure, they can be improved on while already on a fat loss diet, but it's probably better to implement these changes prior to caloric restriction. Use trackers or apps to monitor your progress and celebrate small victories. This will help build confidence and make the transition to a fat loss diet smoother.

Low Motivation and Enthusiasm

Example: If you have low motivation and enthusiasm for the upcoming diet phase.

Strategy: Motivation is finite, and discipline and commitment win at the end of the day. However, early motivation and enthusiasm can help boost your success early on and set the stage for success and self-efficacy. If you’re dreading starting a fat loss diet, perhaps focus on just improving the overall composition of your diet to improve your health, as well as working on the other habits previously mentioned. If you’re somewhat neutral, consider reigniting your motivation by setting small, achievable goals and rewarding yourself for meeting them. Surround yourself with a supportive community or check out an interesting fitness podcast that ignites more interest and excitement in the process.

Final Thoughts

Remember, dieting is just one aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes, the most important step is to get your life in order before focusing on fat loss. By addressing these challenges and implementing strategies to overcome them, you can set yourself up for long-term success.

About The Author

Gregory Vazquez is dedicated professional in the fields of Nutrition and Exercise science. This practice focuses on promoting balance and well-being by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual issues. Many people find comfort in its calming effects.

For beginners, understanding the process can feel overwhelming at first. The good news is that anyone can learn Reiki regardless of their background or experience. Each session offers unique insights into relaxation and self-awareness as you connect with this ancient art form.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing practice that originated in Japan. It focuses on channeling universal life force energy to promote physical and emotional well-being. This holistic approach encourages relaxation, balance, and self-healing.

Practitioners use their hands to guide energy towards the recipient's body, often without any physical touch. The intention is to clear blockages and restore harmony within the body's energy fields.

Many people describe feeling a deep sense of peace during a session, as if stress melts away. Reiki can be practiced by anyone willing to learn its principles, making it accessible for beginners and experienced individuals alike.

While Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment, it can be used as a complementary therapy to support the body's natural healing process. It is often used to alleviate pain, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and promote overall well-being.

Reiki sessions typically last around 60-90 minutes, during which the practitioner will place their hands on or near specific areas of the body. Some practitioners also incorporate crystals or essential oils into their practice to enhance the healing experience.

Overall, Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive practice that aims to bring balance and harmony to the mind, body, and spirit. It is widely accepted in many cultures and has been found to be beneficial for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Conceptual basis

Reiki is rooted in the idea that life force energy flows through all living beings. This energy connects us to our surroundings and influences our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. If this flow is disrupted, it can lead to imbalances or illness.

Practitioners believe they can channel this healing energy by placing their hands lightly on or near the recipient’s body. This process helps restore balance and promotes relaxation.

The conceptual basis of Reiki emphasizes intention and connection between practitioner and client. It encourages a holistic approach to healing that addresses both mind and body while fostering personal growth.

What Happens During a Reiki Session

During a Reiki session, you’ll typically lie down fully clothed in a quiet, comfortable space. The practitioner gently places their hands on or near your body to facilitate energy transfer. You might feel warmth or tingling as they work through different areas.

The environment is usually serene, with soft music or silence enhancing relaxation. Some clients may enter a meditative state, while others simply drift off into light sleep.

As the session progresses, emotional and physical sensations may emerge. Practitioners encourage openness to these feelings without judgment, allowing for deeper healing experiences throughout the process. Each session can be unique based on individual needs and energies present at that moment.

Techniques

Reiki techniques vary depending on the practitioner and the needs of the recipient. One common approach is hands-on healing, where practitioners lightly place their hands on or near the body. This allows them to channel energy effectively.

Another technique involves distance Reiki, where practitioners send energy remotely. This method can be just as powerful as in-person sessions, making it suitable for those unable to attend physically.

Additionally, some practitioners use symbols and mantras during their sessions. These elements enhance focus and intention, helping to deepen the experience for both healer and client. Each technique offers a unique pathway for promoting relaxation and balance within the body’s energy system.

Unique elements

Reiki incorporates several unique elements that set it apart from traditional healing practices. One of the most distinctive features is the use of energy transfer. Practitioners channel universal life force energy to promote healing in themselves and others.

Another notable aspect is the focus on intention. Reiki emphasizes that a practitioner's intent can significantly influence outcomes, making each session highly personalized. This connection creates an atmosphere of trust and comfort.

Additionally, Reiki often involves specific hand positions or gestures, which help direct energy flow during sessions. These techniques enhance relaxation and foster a deep sense of peace for clients experiencing stress or discomfort.

Should You Try Reiki?

Reiki might be worth considering if you're seeking a holistic approach to wellness. Many people find comfort in its gentle touch, often reporting feelings of relaxation and peace during sessions. It's non-invasive, making it accessible for various individuals.

As a complementary therapy, Reiki can enhance traditional medical treatments without replacing them. It’s particularly appealing for those looking to manage stress or cope with emotional challenges.

Before diving in, it's essential to keep an open mind and explore your needs and expectations. Each person's experience is unique, so what works wonders for one may differ for another. Take the time to educate yourself on this healing practice before trying it out.

Reiki as complementary therapy

Reiki is often considered a complementary therapy, enhancing traditional medical treatments rather than replacing them. Many people turn to Reiki for its holistic approach, focusing on the mind, body, and spirit connection. This can be especially beneficial during recovery from illness or surgery.

Practitioners believe that Reiki helps to balance energy in the body, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. It encourages emotional healing by addressing underlying issues that may affect physical well-being.

Numerous studies suggest that incorporating Reiki into your health regimen can improve overall quality of life. As a gentle practice, it works harmoniously alongside other therapies for comprehensive care.

Potential Health Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is known for its potential to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Many people report feeling a deep sense of calm during and after sessions, which helps in managing anxiety and tension. This peaceful state can lead to improved emotional health.

Additionally, Reiki may aid in pain relief. Some individuals experiencing chronic pain find that regular sessions help alleviate their discomfort, making it easier to cope with daily activities.

Another noteworthy benefit is the boost to the immune system. By fostering a balanced energy flow within the body, Reiki practitioners believe it supports overall wellness and enhances the body's natural healing processes.

Health benefits

Reiki offers a range of potential health benefits that many find intriguing. Practitioners often report reduced stress and anxiety levels after sessions, fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. This alleviation can lead to improved emotional well-being.

Additionally, Reiki may help enhance the body's natural healing processes. Some individuals have experienced relief from chronic pain conditions or faster recovery times following surgery. It promotes an overall sense of balance.

Moreover, by encouraging mindfulness and self-awareness, Reiki can aid in mental clarity. Many people leave sessions feeling rejuvenated, allowing them to face daily challenges with renewed focus and energy.

Training and Certification

Training in Reiki involves a structured curriculum that can vary by practitioner and lineage. Typically, it unfolds over several levels or degrees, starting with basic concepts and techniques before advancing to more complex practices. Each level builds on the previous one.

Certification is often awarded upon completing these training programs. Many practitioners choose to pursue certification through accredited organizations to enhance their credentials. This not only affirms their skills but also provides reassurance for clients seeking professional services.

While formal education isn’t strictly necessary, it offers valuable insights into energy healing principles and ethics. A solid foundation helps ensure effective practice for both the healer and those they assist.

History

Reiki has its roots in Japan, where it was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. After a profound spiritual experience on Mount Kurama, Usui learned to channel energy for healing purposes. This marked the beginning of Reiki as we know it today.

Usui’s teachings spread rapidly throughout Japan and into other countries. In 1937, one of his students, Hawayo Takata, brought Reiki to the United States. Her enthusiasm helped popularize this healing practice among Western audiences.

Over time, various styles and techniques emerged from Usui's original method. Today, Reiki is practiced worldwide and continues to evolve while staying true to its core principles of balance and healing energy exchange.

Adoption

Reiki has seen a significant rise in popularity over the past few decades. Many people seek alternative therapies, and Reiki fits perfectly into this trend. Its gentle approach resonates with those looking for holistic healing methods.

As interest grows, more practitioners are emerging worldwide. This increase in availability makes it easier for individuals to explore their options. The supportive community surrounding Reiki enhances its appeal even further.

Moreover, various wellness centers now offer Reiki alongside other treatments like yoga and meditation. This integration showcases how adaptable and complementary this practice can be within broader health initiatives.

How to Find a Reiki Practitioner

Finding a Reiki practitioner can be an enlightening journey. Start by searching online directories that specialize in holistic health services. Websites often provide reviews and testimonials from clients, helping you gauge the practitioner's reputation.

You can also ask for recommendations from friends or family who have experienced Reiki sessions. Personal experiences can guide you to trustworthy practitioners in your area.

Don’t forget to consider distance Reiki options as well. Many practitioners offer virtual sessions, allowing you to connect with skilled healers regardless of location. This flexibility opens up more opportunities for finding the right fit for your needs.

Distance Reiki

Distance Reiki is a fascinating approach that allows practitioners to send healing energy across time and space. Even if you're miles apart, the connection remains strong. This practice relies on intention and focus rather than physical presence.

During a Distance Reiki session, the practitioner typically begins by tuning into your energy. They may use visualization techniques or symbols specific to Reiki to channel healing vibrations your way. Clients often report feeling sensations of warmth or relaxation, just as they would in an in-person session.

This method can be especially beneficial for those unable to visit a practitioner due to health issues or geographical constraints. It opens up opportunities for healing beyond traditional settings.

What to Expect

Before your Reiki session, it’s important to arrive with an open mind. You might feel a mix of excitement and curiosity about the experience. Dress comfortably, as you’ll remain fully clothed during the treatment.

During the session, you will typically lie down on a massage table while the practitioner lightly places their hands either on or just above your body. Many people report feeling deep relaxation, warmth, or tingling sensations in response to the energy flow.

Afterward, take time to notice how you feel emotionally and physically. Some individuals experience immediate relief from tension or stress; others may find insights emerge over time as they process the healing experience.

Before, during, and after a Reiki session

Before your Reiki session, create a calm environment. Arrive early to relax and set an intention for your healing journey. This can help you focus on what you hope to achieve during the session.

During the session, you'll lie down fully clothed while the practitioner lightly places their hands on or near you. You might feel warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation as energy flows through your body. It's normal to drift into a meditative state.

Afterward, give yourself time to reflect on the experience. Drink plenty of water and notice any changes in how you feel emotionally or physically over the next few days. Each session can bring new insights and benefits.

FAQs

Many people have questions about reiki, especially if they are considering trying it for the first time. One common query is whether reiki is religious or spiritual in nature. While it does draw on energy principles, many practitioners approach it as a holistic healing method rather than a specific belief system.

Another frequent concern is about the experience itself. Some wonder if they need to prepare beforehand or what to wear during a session. The good news is that there's no special preparation required; just come with an open mind and comfortable clothing.

People often ask how many sessions they might need to see benefits. This varies from person to person, but many find that multiple sessions enhance their overall wellbeing and relaxation.

Common questions

Many people have questions about reiki, especially if they’re new to it. Here are the main criteria to consider:

Accreditation and Recognition

Accreditation is a vital aspect of any educational program, including health coaching certifications. Accreditation ensures that the program meets established standards of quality and rigor. It signifies that the curriculum is comprehensive, the instructors are qualified, and the program adheres to ethical guidelines. Accredited programs are often recognized by professional organizations and employers, enhancing your credibility and marketability as a health coach.

When researching certification programs, look for those accredited by reputable accrediting bodies such as the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the International Coach Federation (ICF), or other recognized organizations. These accrediting bodies evaluate programs based on stringent criteria, ensuring that they provide high-quality education and training.

Curriculum Quality

The curriculum is the core of any certification program. A high-quality curriculum should cover a wide range of topics relevant to health coaching, including nutrition, exercise science, behavior change, motivational interviewing, and coaching techniques. It should provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prepare you for real-world coaching scenarios.

When evaluating the curriculum, consider the following aspects:

Comprehensive Coverage: The program should cover all essential areas of health coaching, including physical health, mental health, and lifestyle management. It should address various health conditions and populations, equipping you to work with diverse clients.

Evidence-Based Content: The curriculum should be based on current scientific research and best practices in health and wellness. It should emphasize evidence-based approaches to coaching, ensuring that you can provide reliable and effective guidance to your clients.

Practical Training: Look for programs that offer hands-on training, such as supervised coaching sessions, case studies, and role-playing exercises. Practical experience is crucial for developing coaching skills and building confidence.

Specialization Options: Some programs offer specialized tracks or electives, allowing you to focus on areas of interest, such as weight management, sports nutrition, or corporate wellness. Specializations can enhance your expertise and expand your career opportunities.

Flexibility and Accessibility

Flexibility and accessibility are important considerations, especially if you have other commitments such as work or family responsibilities. Certification programs vary in their delivery formats, ranging from in-person classes to online courses. Here are some factors to consider:

Online vs. In-Person: Online programs offer flexibility in terms of scheduling and location. They allow you to study at your own pace and from the comfort of your home. In-person programs, on the other hand, provide opportunities for face-to-face interaction and networking with instructors and peers. Consider your learning style and preferences when choosing between online and in-person formats.

Part-Time vs. Full-Time: Some programs offer part-time options, allowing you to balance your studies with other commitments. Part-time programs may take longer to complete but provide greater flexibility. Full-time programs, while more intensive, enable you to complete your certification more quickly.

Self-Paced vs. Structured: Self-paced programs allow you to progress through the curriculum at your own speed, while structured programs follow a fixed schedule with set deadlines. Self-paced programs offer flexibility, but structured programs provide a more organized and disciplined learning experience.

Cost and Financial Aid

The cost of certification programs can vary widely, depending on factors such as the program's length, content, and delivery format. When evaluating the cost, consider not only the tuition fees but also additional expenses such as textbooks, study materials, and exam fees. It is important to assess the overall value of the program in relation to its cost.

Tuition Fees: Compare the tuition fees of different programs and determine what is included in the cost. Some programs may offer installment plans or discounts for early registration.

Additional Expenses: Factor in the cost of textbooks, study guides, exam fees, and any other required materials. Some programs may bundle these expenses into the tuition fees, while others may charge them separately.

Financial Aid and Scholarships: Check if the program offers financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants, or payment plans. Financial aid can make certification programs more affordable and accessible. Some organizations and institutions also offer scholarships specifically for health coaching students.

Support and Resources

The level of support and resources provided by the certification program can significantly impact your learning experience and professional development. Look for programs that offer robust support systems and valuable resources to help you succeed.

Instructor Support: Access to knowledgeable and experienced instructors is crucial for guidance and feedback. Programs that offer regular interaction with instructors, whether through online forums, live webinars, or in-person sessions, can enhance your learning experience.

Peer Interaction: Opportunities to connect and collaborate with fellow students can provide valuable networking and support. Programs that facilitate peer interaction through discussion boards, group projects, or study groups can enrich your learning experience.

Career Services: Some programs offer career services, such as job placement assistance, resume building, and interview preparation. These services can help you transition from certification to a successful health coaching career.

Continuing Education: Look for programs that provide opportunities for continuing education and professional development. Access to advanced courses, workshops, and certifications can help you stay updated with the latest trends and expand your expertise.

By considering these criteria, you can make an informed decision when choosing a health coaching certification program. The philosophy behind osteomyology emphasizes the body's inherent ability to heal itself when properly aligned and balanced. This alternative therapy believes that by restoring proper alignment to the musculoskeletal system, overall health and well-being can be improved.

Originating from the Greek words "osteo" (bone) and "myo" (muscle), osteomyology focuses on the relationship between these two vital components of the body. While both focus on the musculoskeletal system, there are fundamental differences between the two.

In osteomyology, the emphasis is on assessing and correcting structural imbalances in the body through gentle manipulations and adjustments. Osteomyologists primarily work with the bones, muscles, and joints to promote overall health and well-being.

On the other hand, osteopathy takes a broader approach that considers not only the musculoskeletal system but also how it relates to other bodily systems. Osteopaths aim to enhance the body's ability to heal itself by addressing restrictions in movement and promoting optimal function throughout all areas of the body.

Another key difference lies in their training requirements. The vibrations from sound are believed to stimulate energy flow and promote balance within the body.

The practice of Sonopuncture dates back centuries, originating in ancient Chinese medicine where sound was used for healing purposes. Today, it has evolved into a modern therapy that integrates traditional wisdom with contemporary technology. By harnessing the power of sound frequencies, Sonopuncture aims to address physical, emotional, and energetic imbalances.

Unlike traditional acupuncture, Sonopuncture does not involve penetrating the skin with needles.
